How it worked

  • Takeaways came from the Food Standards Agency's public hygiene register, with phone numbers from public business listings.
  • An AI voice assistant rang each one in the late afternoon and asked the price of a chicken tikka masala, curry only.
  • Where a takeaway sells a "chicken masala" instead, that price is listed and marked.
  • Anything unusual was checked by hand before going on the map.

Built to be fair

  • The AI says it's an AI in its first sentence and never pretends to be a person.
  • It never sells anything, and anyone who asks is never rung again.
  • No audio is kept, and only the last four digits of each number are stored.
  • Takeaways can correct their price or come off the map at any time.
